The Doctor of Professional Studies (D Prof) is offered by LSMT for experienced professionals seeking advanced expertise in their chosen field while continuing their professional careers. The programme focuses on original, applied research, enabling candidates to translate academic knowledge into meaningful solutions for their organisations, professions and communities.
Delivered by highly qualified faculty with strong academic and professional backgrounds, the programme connects contemporary research with real-world practice. Candidates explore current developments in their discipline while developing advanced research and analytical skills.
The D Prof is a minimum 36-month programme, structured across three academic years of 60 ECTS each. The first year focuses on advanced coursework and the development of an approved research proposal, while the second and third years are dedicated to supervised research and the doctoral thesis.
The programme is delivered entirely online, offering working professionals the flexibility to pursue doctoral-level study alongside their careers. Candidates receive ongoing guidance from an assigned supervisor or research faculty member, along with access to academic and professional support throughout their doctoral journey.

The Curriculum

The Doctor of Professional Studies at LSMT is designed so that scholars complete within a minimum of 36 months. Extension years are not normally granted. The program comprises three phases across three academic years, each carrying 60 ECTS.

Coursework - Year 1 (Semesters 1 & 2), 60 ECTS The first year covers research design and methodology, qualitative and quantitative techniques, research tools, academic writing and ethics, advanced literature review, and a discipline-specific elective drawn from your chosen research cluster. The year concludes with finalisation of your research topic, submission and approval of your research proposal, and allocation of your supervisor or research faculty. Multiple seminars and presentations take place throughout.

Research Lab - Year 2 (Semesters 3 & 4), 60 ECTS Fieldwork, archival or studio work as appropriate to your discipline, data collection and analysis, synopsis submission and six-monthly progress reporting, alongside further seminars and presentations.

Doctoral Thesis - Year 3 (Semesters 5 & 6), 60 ECTS Thesis write-up, committee reviews, revisions, pre-submission defence, the viva voce (oral defence) and the award of the doctorate.

Throughout all three phases you are guided and supervised by your assigned supervisor or research faculty member.

The curriculum has these distinctive features:
  • Progressive mastery and application of related concepts and theories.
  • Cohesiveness within each semester, with an identified theme connecting learning and outcomes.
  • A capstone project — the dissertation — demonstrating summative knowledge.
  • A built-in cohesion approach, with a clear pathway to program completion.

D Prof Course Structure

Within 1st Month:
  • Invitation to Enrolment for the Doctoral Program.
  • Doctoral Program Entrance Test.
  • Personal Interview by Department Research Committee (DRC) for candidates who qualify in the entrance test.
Within 2nd - 6th Month:
  • Selection For Coursework.
  • Fee Submission For Coursework.
  • Commencement of Semester 1 modules and allocation of supervisor / research faculty.
Within 7th - 12th Month:
  • Completion of Semester 2 modules. Submission and approval of the research proposal.
  • Synopsis submission in five copies. Research Degree Committee (RDC) process begins.
Within 13th - 18th Month:
  • Fee submission for Year 2.
  • Commencement of fieldwork, data collection and analysis.
  • Six-monthly progress reports submitted electronically, duly signed by your supervisor.
Within 19th - 24th Month:
  • Continued data collection and analysis.
  • Research seminars and progress presentations.
  • Six-monthly progress report submitted electronically, duly signed by your supervisor.
Within 25th - 33rd Month:
  • Fee submission for Year 3.
  • Thesis development and write-up.
  • Six-monthly progress reports submitted electronically, duly signed by your supervisor.
  • Pre-Submission Defence Committee (PSDC).
  • Thesis submission in five copies, duly signed by your supervisor.
Within 34th - 36th Month:
  • Final viva voce, following receipt of reports from external examiners.
  • Award of the doctorate.
