At LSMT, the credit/contact hour policy is based on the Carnegie system and applies to all courses, degree levels, and instructional formats. This ensures consistency and quality across academic offerings. Below is a detailed breakdown of how credit hours are awarded:

  • 1. Lectures, Seminars, and Discussions:

For traditional classroom-based courses, one semester credit hour is awarded for every fifteen 50-minute sessions over the course of the semester, with the expectation that students complete two hours of outside preparation for each session. For a three-credit course, this equates to meeting three times per week for fifteen weeks, totaling 45 sessions. This formula can be adjusted to suit different academic calendars.

  • 2. Group-Supervised Activities (Labs, Field Trips, Practicums):

For lab-based or group-supervised activities, one credit hour is awarded for 45 50-minute sessions, or for 15 sessions of 150 minutes or more. These activities usually require minimal outside preparation, and credits are awarded based on hands-on participation. In cases where substantial preparation is required, 100-minute sessions for 15 weeks may also count toward credit.

  • 3. Individual Supervised Study (Independent Study, Tutorials):

For independent study or tutorial work, students are awarded one credit hour for every 45 50-minute sessions under the direct supervision of faculty. This includes study programs where students work independently with initial direction and periodic review from an instructor, leading to final evaluation.

  • 4. Full-Time Independent Study (Practicums, Teaching, etc.):

Students involved in full-time academic work, such as student teaching or extended practicums, may earn one credit hour for each week of full-time work in an academic setting. This recognizes the intensive commitment involved in full-time study-related work.

  • 5. Experiential Learning:

Credits can be awarded for learning achieved outside the classroom when it is a significant component of a degree program, such as internships or fieldwork. One semester credit hour is granted for every 40-45 clock-hour week of supervised experiential learning.

  • 6. Examinable Credit:

LSMT may grant credit based on demonstrated mastery of material through examinations. This type of credit can be used to fulfill degree requirements or reduce the number of required hours for a degree

  • 7. Short or Intensive Sessions:

Credit hours may also be awarded for shorter sessions, such as summer or intersession courses, in proportion to those earned during standard semester terms. No more than one credit hour is granted per week of full-time study.

  • 8. Appeals and Reconsiderations:

If a student wishes to appeal the credit hour policy or request a reconsideration for unique circumstances, they can submit their request to LSMT’s Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Special arrangements, including those involving credit earned from accredited programs abroad, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Ensuring Consistency:

This policy ensures uniformity across all LSMT programs, providing a clear and structured framework for awarding credit hours. The policy accommodates various educational experiences, including traditional classroom instruction, independent study, hands-on learning, and experiential education.

For any questions or specific inquiries related to the credit hour policy, students are encouraged to contact the academic office.
